BLS/CPR

Basic Life Support (BLS) is the process by which individuals are able to recognize and systematically treat life-threatening situations ranging from choking to unresponsive individuals, including those experiencing cardiac arrest. Within this certification, there are two levels offered: Heartsaver CPR (BLS) and Healthcare Provider (BLS-HCP). Heartsaver is intended for general public not working in healthcare settings or without access to healthcare equipment. Individuals requiring this level could include industrial employees, health and safety personnel working in offices, some medical office staff, and individuals interested in how to respond in a crisis. Healthcare Provider CPR is intended for those working in healthcare settings or alongside healthcare providers, such as firefighters, police officers, nurses, EMTs, respiratory therapists, or dental professionals providing sedation. Professions listed are examples only - if you have any questions about which certification is most appropriate for you, please contact us. As per Heart and Stroke guidelines, certifications are valid for one year.

ACLS

Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) is a course designed for healthcare professionals to recognize and systematically respond and treat life threatening cardiac events.  The 2 day, 16 hour, certification course is completed using visual resources (text and video) as well as hands-on participation in mock cardiac event and arrest situations, with emphasis placed on cohesive team dynamics and effective communication.

Both re-certification (1 - 8 hour class) and certification classes instruct and review: BLS - primary and secondary assessments; CPR and AED use; Recognition and management of respiratory arrest and respiratory equipment; Recognition of cardiac rhythms including cardiac arrest; Cardiac, ACS, and stroke algorithms; Post cardiac arrest recovery; and, termination guidelines.

Prior to attending an ACLS class, Heart and Stroke recommends students: complete the ACLS Precourse Self-Assessment found on the Heart and Stroke website (https://resuscitation.heartandstroke.ca/) under the ACLS Student webpage, be current in BLS certification (BLS certification is not offered through ACLS attendance), have reviewed the ACLS provider manual, and are familiar with the ACLS algorithms.

We provide a comfortable and relaxed learning environment, and appreciate all levels of ACLS familiarity - from new healthcare provider to experienced physician.  We bring over 25 years of combined ACLS experience and passion to each class, and find enjoyment in being resources for such an important life saving qualification.  Please see our Contact section for any further inquiries into course requirements, content, and delivery, or to book your ACLS class! As per Heart and Stroke guidelines, recertification is required every two years.
